For more, we have reporter Han Peng joining us in the studio. Han Peng, could you summarize the latest changes of China's military structure?
A: Sure. The biggest change is that the Chinese army has officially added a new force, called the Rocket Force, operating in parallel with the Land, Naval and Air Forces.
The newly established Rocket Force has come on the basis of one of the world's largest land-based missile forces, which also controls China's nuclear weapons. It was previously called by the Chinese army as the Second Artillery Forces, whose title is quite a low profile.
But now, giving it an official name and a status in the Chinese army, many believe it's a show of China's increasing military transparency and confidence. Besides, the Chinese army has also established two new departments, called the strategic support force and the army leadership institution.
The second major change in the Chinese military structure is that, the army is re-dividing the defense work in the vast territory of China. China currently has seven military regional commands. That means there are seven separate command structures, which has made coordination between military regions difficult.
To solve the problem and strengthen central military leadership, the regional commands will be regrouped into several "combat areas". But how that reform will be implemented, remains a question for many of us.
